A large icicle hung from the eaves of the Arctic.
The last mother polar bear on Earth dug into a cave
and gave birth to two cubs.

Warm air swept into the ice cave too early.
The mother bear rose
and stretched with all her might.
The cubs, just waking,
mimicked her every move.

Then the base of the icicle snapped.
It sored into outer space
and vanished completely from our sight.

But humanity does not forget polar bears.
The Galileo Observatory
discovered a tiny new moon.

Children gazed at the icicle-moon through telescopes
and made wishes,
while adults could buy tour packages
to the polar bear ruins.

Another longing
has begun its endless orbit around us.

  북극 처마 끝에 큰 고드름이 달렸다. 지구 마지막 어미 북극곰이 동굴을 파고 들어가 새끼 두 마리를 낳았다. 얼음동굴에 때 이르게 따뜻한 공기가 들이닥쳤다. 어미 곰은 일어나서 생각도 없이 힘껏 기지개를 켰다. 마침 눈을 뜬 새끼들이 이걸 또 그대로 따라했다. 이때 그만 고드름 밑동이 끊어지고 말았다. 고드름은 우주공간으로 날아가 우리 시계에서 완전히 사라졌다. 하지만 북극곰을 잊을 인류가 아니다. 갈릴레이천문대가 아주 작은 새 달을 기어이 찾아냈다. 아이들은 망원경으로 고드름달을 바라보며 소원을 빌게 되었고 어른들에겐 북극곰 유적지 관광 상품이 발매되었다. 또 하나의 그리움이 하염없이 우리 둘레를 돌게 된 것이다.
