Scarecrow
Poem by Lee Yongha
When I visited a country said to be
overflowing with the jobless,
a great landowner gave me a tour of his farm.
The wheat fields, stretching to every horizon,
were impressive enough—
but what truly astonished me
were the scarecrows, standing shoulder to shoulder
amid the golden waves.
Dressed in bright uniforms,
they spun their arms like windmills,
shouted like loudspeakers,
and drove the birds away.
Pointing toward them, the landowner said,
“Those are human scarecrows.
They perform better than mechanical ones
and cost far less.
Automation has driven countless people from their jobs.
This is the first case
of humans reclaiming jobs from machines.”
The hem of the landowner’s red jacket
fluttered like a flag.
